Oriel

Support

One remote window, live.

Oriel shows and controls one window of your Linux computer on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. This page covers what the computer needs, how to connect the first time, and what to do when something goes wrong.

What you need

Connect for the first time

  1. Add the desktop. In Oriel, tap + (on the Mac, click it) and enter the address as user@host, with :port if SSH doesn't use port 22. A name is optional.
  2. Add Oriel's key to the computer. Oriel signs in with a key it made on your device. Open the key button to see it, copy it, and on the computer run:
    mkdir -p ~/.ssh && cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
Paste the key, press Return, then Control-D. Each device has its own key; add each once.
  3. Trust the computer. On the first connection Oriel shows the computer's host key fingerprint. To check it, run this on the computer (add -p and the port if it isn't 22) and compare:
    ssh-keyscan localhost | ssh-keygen -lf -
If they match, choose Trust and connect.
  4. Choose a window. Oriel lists the open windows by workspace. The one you choose moves onto a display made for your device, and goes back to its workspace when you leave.

Using a window

When something goes wrong

“Key not accepted”

The computer didn't accept Oriel's key. Add the key as in step 2, for the same user you entered in the address, and check that ~/.ssh is 700 and authorized_keys is 600.

“Host key changed”

The computer presented a different host key than the one you trusted, so Oriel stopped before signing in. This is expected after reinstalling the computer or its SSH server. If you didn't change anything, don't continue: someone may be in between. If you did, check the new fingerprint as in step 3 and trust it.

“gliff-server Not Found”

gliff-server isn't installed, or isn't on the PATH that SSH commands get. Check with ssh user@host 'command -v gliff-server' from another computer; it should print the server's path.

“gliff-server Didn't Start” or no windows are listed

Make sure Hyprland is running and you are logged in to it on the computer, then try again. Oriel talks to the first Hyprland instance of the user it signed in as.

Can't reach the computer

Check that your device and the computer are on the same network or VPN, that SSH is running, and on iPhone and iPad that Oriel is allowed in Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network.
